* We have been so busy that we haven't had the time to update the website properly, but be assured that the same high quality of storytelling is being delivered week after week in schools, libraries and museums. We will get feedback on here again as we go into the every busy run up to summer holidays. In the meantime this tweet from a parent on twitter to a teacher who was looking for an author visit sums up just what an impact Richard's inputs have.

Hi Richard,
I wanted to thank you again for running such a great workshop. That was a challenging situation and the ease with which you handled so many needs in the room was fantastic to see- storyteller, workshop lead, mentor and toddler whisperer all in one! It was wonderful to see the change you created in the group of young people as you brought them together over the course of the workshop and their reviews at the end really said it all.
Worth waking up early for indeed!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for joining us yesterday. Sorry I’m a little late following up, as I was working a half-day yesterday. Good afternoon Richard.
Thank you very much for our meeting today. The children absolutely loved chatting to you and listening to your stories. As did I! They have been very inspired by you and have gone home with great ideas about stories they want to write.
I have to say you did a fantastic job at keeping the children engaged, especially being on line. Not an easy job I'm sure but you were great.

Good Afternoon Richard,
I just want to pass on my thanks for your workshops over the last few days. Our children absolutely loved them. So much so that siblings were joining on to each other's sessions so they could have a different story. Our Twitter feed also shows that parents and Grandparents loved them too.

Hi Sarah,
Both sessions have been very enjoyable in year 3.
The initial session mid-November gave the children the chance to discuss rhyme and listen to Richard's masterful storytelling, whilst the follow up session this week gave the children a chance to show off their own rhymes and imagery based on 'Krindlekrax' our class text in English. E.g. 'Krindlekrax drinks Pepsi Max'. The time has flown by in both sessions.
The safe zone Richard creates when discussing words has perhaps given the children more confidence in discussing their own ideas when generating synonyms and forming alliteration during the sentence stacking part of our English lessons.
Hope that helps!
Dan

Thank you so much for an inspiring, fun and practical day! Thank you so much for visiting our school on Monday. Always a complete joy to have you in our school and listen to your stories. It is so inspiring to see all the children engaged especially those ones that we know normally struggle in a classroom environment. It really was quite amazing to see some of the Year 5 totally absorbed for the whole workshop. Both children and adults have been inspired by you and we will use lots of your ideas for our writing. Hi Richard,
It was an absolute pleasure to have you at Hovingham today. Thank you for inspiring us all, we were blown away with your storytelling and can't wait to make use of what we learnt today through the power of stories.
I forgot to mention, something amazing happened this afternoon. You may recall I mentioned a group of children in my class that had been unkind to one child. Well, as the story continues... a member of support staff came back from lunch smiling from ear to ear because this particular group of children were spotted playing games with the young person they had been unkind towards. During our circle time the children involved spoke about the Lonely Giant Story and what they had done to be kind. It was a truly special moment!

Here is an attached spreadsheet comparing the attainment of the Writing project group, showing all ‘matched’ students made progress.
The gaps indicate students were absent at the time of testing. Scores are out of 24 in line with our new Edexcel GCSE syllabus. Allowance was given for the age of the children in the marking process.
The students improved in many areas: basic punctuation and paragraphing; using more adjectives; using connectives to link ideas; adding details and wanting to engage the reader. The latter skill was particularly noticeable- many students seemed to enjoy writing an interesting story and used techniques to make the reader interested!
From the evidence of this data, we can conclude that the students all benefitted a great deal from being involved in the writing project.
Thanks to all involved in organising the project and of course, to Richard who we would be delighted to have return.
Best Wishes

Dear Richard and Iain, working with Richard was a great honour for me, and I am glad that you met each other. Our work with Richard was outstandingly successful last week, it was a special experience for me which, I believe, rarely happen between artists, so I would love to continue our cooperation. We are going to promote Richard’s works in Hungary, as they are brilliant writings. The Hungarian publishing and theatrical sphere is not too open for new artists but it is possible to get into it with a well structured plan. I feel honoured to deal with this as I believe in Richard’s success. I wish you a wonderful day!!

I want to thank you all so much for first giving our students a chance. For spending hours upon hours discussing and chatting and liasing over this project and for also choosing us to work with Richard again as well as organising and offering support along the way. Dearest Richard,
Thank you again for such an inspirational morning. I feel so lucky that I was able to listen to all your wonderful tales . It was a huge success and the feedback from both children and adults has been so positive. One of the teachers described their class as 'buzzing' after the workshop.
Hope you had fun at the Infants and look forward to hearing more tales again.

Dear Richard, It was just wonderful having you with us for the start of our story week. The children were so excited and enthusiastic and a couple of them really shone during the day (particularly Sammy-Jo and Evelyn) thanks to their enjoyment of it.
I have always loved oral storytelling and so I really enjoyed hearing your stories and learning from you.
I hope we'll work together again at some point!

Hi Richard,
Thank you so much for today. It was wonderful! We all had a fantastic day - children, staff and parents. The children were buzzing, as were the staff. The day surpassed my expectations and I know that it will have made a real difference to our children and inspired them. I came home and my mum and I have been chatting and reminiscing about Yorkshire and Old Cocker. I would love to keep in touch and will certainly recommend you to other schools.

Hi Richard, Hope you are well. I have been meaning to send you the attached 'thank you' letters that the year 6 children have written to you, but have not had the chance as it's been so busy these last couple of weeks!
You will be able to see from the children's responses just how much they loved your workshop! It certainly was a very enjoyable and productive day!
We look forward to working with you next year.
Take care.

When I heard an author was coming in to inspire the year 6, I wasn't very excited although I do like reading. However from the moment you started-you had me hooked my eyes were glued to you the whole time your creativity had me and the audience captivated. You definitely managed to get the message across that there is more to life than video games. I don't know how you did it as many of the children in year 6 are not easy to convince. Good afternoon,
Hello I was one of the teachers who was in your workshop at Meadowdale Academy last week, can I just say how fabulous the workshop was and gave me a new perspective on story writing.
As a result the school has launched a 500 word story competition, on top of this I've decided to have a go at a class write which I introduced this morning. I gave the children the ending, which I've never done before but after your workshop was intrigued to see how it would work.
Anyway they have come up with an amazing idea for their story which we're hoping to finish next week before we break up for Christmas.

Hi Richard,
We also thoroughly enjoyed the day. We were chatting in the staff meeting today and all the staff agreed it was a great day, and very beneficial. The year 5 teachers were particularly pleased with their children who were enthusing about the day and about wanting to write. One boy said that it had really inspired him. One of my target boys also said at break time, couldn't we carry on writing after break as it is so good!

Hi Richard What an amazing day we have had with you in school.
The assembly at the start of the day set the scene for the awe and wonder you delivered throughout your visit. Highlights for me were:
Watching the faces of the staff as your stories unfolded - they were exactly the same as the children's - enthralled!
The gasp from the children when you showed them what had been made from the stick
Your amazingly intuitive responses to those of our children who have a high level of need
Hearing the feedback from staff after you had been with a group of children
Thank you so much. We will be in touch to organise another visit soon.
Please feel free to share my number with anybody who wants to find out more about you before they book you.

-he knew exactly how to engage the kids
- the buzz around him was incredible it's all my class have talked about
- one child in year 5 shared his Traveller heritage with the rest of the class and this was the first time he had and also when he felt that he was listened to by his peers!
- Richard had fab behaviour management he instantly won the more challenging children over!
- even our most vulnerable children with autism engaged and one even wanted to write a letter to George!
Overall feeling was fantastic.

Thank you for your email, I will make sure I pass on your kind words to the children and our Head. They certainly were inspired by your visit and many in fact chose to write that afternoon instead of our planned work. Quite a few also wrote stories over the weekend and a lot of their stories involved making the ordinary, extraordinary as you suggested!
As promised, here are some comments that the children made in their writing.
"Mr O'Neill made us laugh so much that Harvey fell over!"
"I felt that I could fly away with his stories"
"When Mr O'Neill was telling us the funny, jaw dropping stories it felt like I was at the real thing"
" Mr O'Neill made me feel interested in stories"
"Mr O'Neill is a very funny man because he jumps around a lot and does fun things"
"Mr O'Neill taught us lots of funny things, it made me happy"
"Give me a piece of paper and a pencil, I just want to go and write" (that child did go and do some at the weekend and he is one of my most reluctant writers!)
"I could see the pictures in my head"
"I had giggles in my throat every second"
Sorry it took me so long to send them!

The workshop was designed to look at the power of story, and the fun which can be got from listening to stories and from creating stories of your own. Richard has a very relaxed and engaging style, which is deceptively simple, introducing characters and situations that might at first seem unrelated, then weaving them together in a way that takes his audience along with him and makes them really care about what happens. . By making it fun and keeping the level of enthusiasm high, Richard had almost got the students to do story-writing by stealth!

Thanks Richard.
We loved having you working with our children here at Necton. All the children spoke very positively about your visit and several classes did a follow up piece of writing, with really good results.

Hi Laura
I hope you are feeling better.
I just wanted to let you know how much the children (and adults!) enjoyed Richard’s story telling today. Thank you so much for arranging for him to come into school, we would love to have him again sometime. He was amazing with our vulnerable children and made sure EVERY child was able to join in and have fun. It was good for the children to hear that he had lived in a caravan when he was younger and for that to come across as such a positive experience.
I’m sure his book will be a great success when it is published.
See you soon,

Just a quick email to say thank you for today! We ALL thoroughly enjoyed ourselves whilst learning so much! You enriched every child with the knowledge of diversity which I'm sure is what you wanted to achieve! You had our children in the palm of your hand which is an admired talent!
I can't wait to get started next week and see where it leads us!! Anything else I can do just let me know and I'll send you any photos, quotes etc!
Thank you again!

It would be lovely to have you back again and the targeted story writing sounds right up Y5 ‘s street. I will certainly see what we can do.
Thank you once again for a super day and I hope to see you again in the very near future.

I would like you to know how much we all enjoyed your storytelling
sessions when you came to our school this week. It was a great pleasure
to see the look of sheer delight on the faces of the children as they listened
intently to your very funny and interesting tales. I myself did not want the
session to end! I could have listened to you for hours.

We found the storytelling very interesting and useful to use in a class context. The children sat and listened throughout as a result of the lively storytelling. They were clearly riveted. They loved the session and were really engaged . It provided language opportunities they wouldn't ordinarily have had.

Hi Richard
I just wanted to thank you
again for the great work you did with our primary learners. They went
back to their campuses and raved about the day. They've all got their
certificates now, and the basic storyboard, and they're buzzing about
practising over the holidays ready for telling their stories in
September. It should be brilliant, so thanks again.
I've been recommending you far and wide - I think our catering manager
would be interested in you working with the catering staff on how to
speak to the learners, so she should be in touch soon.
Hopefully we'll work together again next year. In the meantime, I
hope you have a fab summer.

Dear Richard, Thank you so much for taking the time to come into our school the other week. The children were so engaged with your stories. They thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and found these inspiring as did the staff. They contained the right balance of humour and educational content. You managed to address some potential sensitive areas around prejudice and inclusion in a fun and relevant way. Each session was tailored appropriately to the age range. The delivery of the stories felt like you were doing it on a one to one basis rather than to an assembly hall. I can see how we will be able to use your story telling skills to engage the children in the future and hope to be able to have you back to run writing workshops.

Thank you Fantastic! I have learned so much about communicating on a level far beyond the realms of books or computers. A world of possibilities has opened up.
I enjoyed Richard’s pace of the day and recognition of the skills we already had and could build on. Having fun and getting to know my colleagues better.
Richard was very open and friendly creating a safe learning environment for us all. I feel I have a toolkit with which I can approach a story and a process for how to develop stories of my own.
A perfect way to spend a day at work.
Lifted the lid on creativity and enthusiasm.

Story4writing day St Joseph's Primary Stafford 18th October, 2011 Children listened intently for long periods of time. Some children have written more than they would normally-kept writing even when asked to stop for break. Children were engaged throughout Fun, creative and pitched at a level that all were able to access but still be challenged. Got the children to think about their own worlds rather than make believe. Children even surprised us with their story voices and commitment to writing. Kate Teece Barrie Scymgeour Year 5 teachers

"Having, for many years, taught children the processes of writing a story, I was naturally interested in how the processes would be perceived by a professional story-teller.
Were the processes and messages that I was giving the children in line with that of a recognised author and oral story-teller? Always keen to learn and improve my own professional practice, I was excited at the prospect of watching Richard O'Neill apply his knowledge and skills in a class of mixed ability year 4's. The process began with wonderful modelling, cleverly delivering story around themes which the children could immediately identify and enthuse. This manifested itself in the telling of the story of "Apple Juice Jones" , an ex-serviceman with a passion for monster trucks and a wartime habit of driving too quickly! The children were enthralled by the oral story-telling and the rich characters contained within it. Moreover, they could readily identify with the different aspects of the story, mapping these easily onto 'story mountain' templates. The processes for creating that memorable story were explored during the school week and messages such as "Turn the ordinary into the extra-ordinary" were readily employed by the children, allowing them to utilise their wonderful imaginations. As a 'seasoned practitioner', the message of "delve deeper into written sentences in order explore narrative possibilities" struck a chord. It is the potential within a well-written sentence that can offer continuity and interest and ultimately, "good story" as opposed to a series of "add-ons". The messages of the week helped me to think of story-writing in different terms - not just as a vehicle for children to demonstrate 'levelled' skills but a creative form which has its own discrete skills often at variance with any derived 'success criteria' (e.g. a host of adjectives can actually impede the flow of the story and are therefore, potentially unhelpful ). The ultimate test of any training is the impact on teaching and learning standards. In that respect, the quality of children's written work and their understanding of writing processes, from note - taking to publishing, has greatly improved as has their teacher's understanding of what constitutes "good story writing and telling!"." You have been a true inspiration for me and the children in my class, who have loved all three days they have worked with you. On Thursday they wrote down their versions of their stories and you could have heard a pin drop in the classroom!
They are all very excited about tomorrow morning, which I am sure will be a great celebration of everybody’s hard work.
The importance of storytelling in a child’s development has struck me more than ever this year and we are certainly going to continue in that vein in our English lessons. I must pass on to you the comments of the Reception/Year One class teacher after our ‘performance’ on Tuesday. Her class is not a class who normally sit and listen easily for any length of time, but she said they had been absolutely enthralled by what they had heard. She asked them on Wednesday morning about what they had seen and she told me she has never seen them so animated or enthusiastic about anything before. They all then wanted to make up their own ‘You’ll never guess what happened to me on the way to school…’ stories! The two classes are going to work together next term on some ‘paired’ storytelling work which will be fantastic.
So thank you again for all your energy and enthusiasm which has certainly been passed on to many people, both young and old.
