Rochdale may have been voted as one of the worst places to live, but our projects there are showing what an amazingly creative place it is. Our New Pioneers are already changing attitudes

Writer/Storyteller in Residence

If you’re looking for a more sustained impact on your literacy and other subjects including, Oracy, behaviour improvement and entrepreneurship then consider a ‘Residency’

A residency can fit with your existing targets and needs. Typically Richard will visit your school at least 4 times in the year and work on particular targets.

Recent and current residences have produced a number of pieces of work including, stories, plays and books, every residency is different and customised to the needs and culture of the school.

Through storytelling we can create unique projects that everyone can have true ownership of, organisations can promote them in the media without fear of being told that its been done elsewhere.
Previous projects have been featured in local, regional and national press and media, including radio and TV. It's always nice for our clients to get the positive coverage they deserve.
.
Residencies also play host to some great projects. They provide unique learning opportunities for staff, pupils, parents, Grandparents and carers alike. They also provide resources that can be re-used, and evidence for Ofsted. We’ve been creating totally original projects for over ten years. They would fill a number of pages, and whilst it great to have such a successful heritage, we also believe that you’re only really as good as your most recent stuff. With that in mind we’ve enclosed below a selection of previous and current projects from the past few years.

List of completed projects:

Inkredible: A writing, art and research project into the history and culture of Tattoos at Middle Primary school in Leeds. The first project of it’s kind in the UK. Inspired by the large number of parents, and carers who had tattoos. We wanted to not only explore this fascinating subject, but also reflect the culture and experience of the children, many of whom had their name tattooed on their parents/grandparents.

The Derby Book festival:  There were two projects in conjunction with the Derby book festival. The first, creation of a play with pupils at Pear Tree primary, the students got to write and perform a play at the Derby festival. The second, creation of a book of stories created by secondary pupils at the Bemrose school in Derby. What had their stories professional illustrated and published, ready for a launch at the festival.

Futures imagined: Futures Imagined a project in conjunction with York St John university and four primary schools in the city. The idea was to harness and expand the creativity of year 5 children. The task was to get them to imagine what the world around them would be like when they are adults. They were tasked to come up with a range of ideas and inventions, which were then professionally illustrated, and published at a specially organised launch at the university. click her for more information Residencies and Projects www.yorksj.ac.uk/news/imagining-futures.html

Boys Story too: A literacy for work project with White Underachieving Boys at Matthew Moss High School Rochdale. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxXMoc66f-SEcjFKSWRRSUQ3ZE0/view?ts=596608c9
Working with a group of boys, the project improved literacy, confidence. motivation and enterprise skills. Such was the buy-in and work rate of the boys, we were able to achieve a lot more than we initially set out to do. The success of the project has resulted in it being carried on for another term, and rolled out across the school.

Tales from the Tow-path: A literacy and oral history project with three primary’s and one secondary school in Castleton Rochdale, commissioned by the Canal and River Trust.
We’re really looking forward to creating a whole range of literature, art and leisure opportunities for children and local residents.

CovenTree: A tree based literacy, craft and eco project with Radford primary Coventry. We are looking forward to creating a range of opportunities to link our work to STEM, as well as Design Technology. We’ll also be crafting wooden resources to bring the outside into the school. As well as aiming to create a ‘Tree Buddy’ story as an e-book.

Innercity Songbook:

For Derby book festival working with Peartree Junior school. Creating 4 new modern folk songs with the help of Sarah our fabulous folk musician. The work was performed at the festival by the children. The project had a huge positive impact on literacy and the children's sense of belonging to their community.

The Wild Word Reserve:
Our current project at Bowling Park Primary in Bradford a two site school of over 600 children. The Wild Word Reserve is a unique reading and literacy improvement project based on encouraging children to become excited about, interested in and champions of words.

The projects and residencies are always original, always fun. And as such we’re always keen to work with new exciting schools.

Residencies can produce a range of outcomes, including;

Targeted literacy improvement for particular pupils and year groups.

Whole school projects.

The creation of new resources; including books and plays.

Coaching for staff.

Creation of workshops for parents/guardians.

A residency is only limited by your imagination, so get in touch to discuss your ideas and exact requirements.

Everyone in work has been talking about your wonderful workshops yesterday - I've had so many emails and comments from all staff praising you and the way you engaged the children. You had them under a magical spell! I love your comment about 'peaceful purposefulness' too. It's a lovely to think our school has that atmosphere.
You breathed such fun and life into everyone with your stories yesterday - you have a rare and special gift and had us captivated!
